BMW Motorrad claimed a ninth consecutive unit sales record in 2019, with growth in almost every important market. BDN financial editor Roger Willis reports.

The brand’s global retail sales volume rose by 5.8% to 175,162 motorcycles and scooters. New ShiftCam boxer-powered R1250GS variants accounted for more than a third of them — in excess of 59,000.

Sales throughout Europe increased by 7%, led by domination of the domestic German scene. A 10.4% gain to 26,292 on home turf once again confirmed Germany as BMW’s largest single market worldwide and defended its status as best-selling brand there. Other positive major European markets were headed by France and Italy. In the former, sales improved by 4.1% to 17,300. And in the latter, they were 10.4% up to 15,580. Spain put on 13.3% to 12,607 while the UK added 3.3% at 9311.

BMW said it was “able to maintain its strong position” in the US and Canada with 15,116 sales, despite a “difficult market environment”. In the previous year, US sales alone had actually increased by 2.2% to 13,842 in similarly rigorous circumstances. Muscular 36.7% growth in Brazil accounted for another 10,064 bikes and the Chinese market expanded by 16.6% to 8818.
