Although in-depth 2021 annual financial results are still some way off, Ducati chief executive Claudio Domenicali couldn’t resist wallowing passionately in absolute record sales figures and “a magical year” for his brand.

Global Ducati retail sales reached 59,447 motorcycles in 2021, 23.7% more than in 2020 and 11.8% higher than 2019’s pre-pandemic level. Recovery from Covid’s deleterious impact in 2020 was evident in every market worth mentioning.

The USA regained leading status, bouncing back by 32% to 9007 bikes sold. Italy was 23% up to 8707, Germany added 11% to 6107, China put on 21% to 4901 and France rose by 12% to 4352. There was even a Brexit dividend as the UK bought 30% more to register a tally of 2941.

Outright best-seller was the Multistrada V4 adventure range with 9957 delivered to customers. Scrambler 800 variants followed on 9059 units and the Monster family came third on 8734.

However, Ducati vice president for global sales and after sales Francesco Milicia cautioned against a surfeit of exuberance: “These results were achieved despite an unpredictable situation generated by the supply crisis that has been on-going for some time. It’s still a very volatile situation and is destined to continue further.”

His boss Claudio simply noted the bleedin’ obvious: “The pandemic, which is still underway, in addition to generating so much suffering, has also made activities more complex.”
