Italian automotive and motorcycle braking systems giant Brembo has acquired Danish motorcycle brake pad manufacturer SBS Friction for £26.9m from SBS Group.

Brembo says the takeover, which should be finalised in the first quarter of 2021, will allow integration of such a strategic component as brake pads in Brembo’s current product range and further strengthen leadership in the motorcycle sector. It is also apparently in line with Brembo’s new mission to become a respected solution provider, with a view to meeting sustainable mobility paradigms.

SBS Friction’s factory is at Svendborg in Denmark, with about 100 employees and annual revenue of approximately £16m in 2019. It develops and produces sintered and organic bike brake pads with a particular focus on innovative and eco-friendly materials. UK importer for the brand is Direct Distribution in Shipley, Yorkshire.

Commenting on the purchase, Brembo chairman Alberto Bombassei (pictured) said: “We are particularly glad to welcome SBS Friction in our group. Despite the highly complex market context, Brembo has maintained its natural propensity to invest in innovation. This acquisition is an important step in our strategy. It enables us to integrate even more specific competences in a key sector and to strengthen our range of ‘made-in-Brembo’ solutions for the benefit of customers.”
