Women are to be allowed to ride motorcycles in Saudi Arabia, the only country in the world that until recently prohibited women from driving. The ban will be lifted from June.

The Saudi Arabian General Directorate of Traffic gave details of the new regulations on 29 December, 2017, three months after King Salman announced that women would be allowed to drive cars and trucks.

The Royal Decree states that the law on driving will be equal for men and women, with no special licence plates for female-driven cars. However, female drivers and riders involved in road accidents or who break traffic laws will be processed at special centres that are run by women. There was no information on the use of helmets.

The World Economic Forum had last year ranked Saudi Arabia as the seventh worse country for women in its annual Global Gender Gap Report.
