HOME TURF SALES DIVE FOR HARLEY

Harley-Davidson’s domestic sales slide is geting more extreme, according to research from UBS investment bank analyst Robin Farley. BDN financial editor Roger Willis reports.

Surveying retail activity during October and November across dealers in Texas and Florida — two of the three strongest US States for off-season bikes sales, Farley concluded that Harley sales were down by a double-digit percentage in both months. Noting that October and November combined provide typically about 72-73% of Harley’s fourth-quarter US retail sales and 11-12% of its full-year tally, and it appears to underperforming the industry as a whole, he said this also suggests market-share loss is accelerating and implies a worsening full-year rate of decline from 2017’s 8.5% fall into double digits.
