British engineers to take on Dakar Rally

A British engineering team has developed a new off-road racing motorcycle to take on the Dakar Rally next January.

Rally Raid Products UK specialises in rally (racing) and adventure bike preparation that typically includes suspension upgrades and long-range fuel tanks. Central to its expanding product range is the KTM 690 Enduro bike which has proven reliable in both around-the-world overland travel and as a competitive rally/racing machine – and indeed formed the basis of the KTM Factory rally bikes until recent changes in Dakar Rally rules outlawed any machine larger than 450cc.

Rally Raid, based in Wollaston, Northants, intends to field a pair of team bikes, in conjunction with Torque Racing, in the 2015 Dakar, starting in South America.

“We are not expecting to take on the factory teams” explains Rally Raid Products’ proprietor John Mitchinson. “Rather, what we have engineered is a strong and reliable bike that requires far less daily maintenance, which ought to minimise the chance of any mechanical failure during the event. We certainly don’t expect to change an engine half way through the race which seems to be the norm these days!” he smiles.
