Telford-based engineering IT company Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence has become “technical partner” of Dorna’s Motol FIM Superbike World Championship, in a deal which will see its sophisticated portable measuring equipment used by WSBK scrutineers for trackside component compliance checks.

Employing Hexagon’s PC-DMIS software and HP-L-20.8 laser scanner, this equipment can monitor the design and dimensions of a variety of components from small engine parts to frames and chassis assemblies. Data can then be used by scrutineers to verify that components meet the regulations laid down after pre-season inspections at each manufacturer’s factory. The Hexagon system is also used at these assessments to confirm that manufacturer-supplied documentation is correct.

Commenting on the Hexagon tie-up, FIM World Superbike technical director Scott Smart said: “Our scrutineers like the Hexagon measuring system as it is highly flexible and accurate across a wide range of sizes and part types. Ease of use and repeatability are of paramount importance, particularly in a busy working environment such as the racing paddock. It’s essential that the procedure is perfect.”
