From its home in Warrington, Rock Oil has built a worldwide reputation for lubricating almost every aspect of motorcycle sport. But the company’s aspirations stretch much further than an indefatigable enthusiasm for bikes. It ships from Cheshire globally to more than 75 countries. And, ironically, only a small percentage of those sales are bikesports-oriented lube. That pursuit of overseas business has now been justly rewarded with a 2020 Queen’s Award for Enterprise, hailing Rock Oil’s remarkable success in international trade.

Since getting into exports by recruiting a first foreign distributor in New Zealand, way back in 1983 on the strength of motorcycle racing connections, Rock Oil chairman Charles Hewitt has seen his turnover grow from less that £4m to approaching £35m this year. And the Queen’s Award is very much seen as a testament to Hewitt’s relentless personal application of the exporter dynamic.

“During the near 40 years I’ve been on the export trail, I have found it humbling to witness the absolute faith in British integrity and quality,” he says. “The respect shown for the UK is fantastic. For Rock, it’s a privilege to showcase the UK and us personally. As a quality-driven business, it accords with our objectives, while at the same time it’s a massive tonic for staff morale to be appreciated in so many far-flung places.”

Recently established export partnerships for Rock include presences in China, Malaysia and Iraq. Even during the current coronavirus crisis, the company says it’s still receiving new enquiries from abroad and developing further partnerships in Spain, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore and Pakistan.
