dealer sets up with a £10k budget

It’s still possible in this era of mega-bucks glass palace showrooms to launch a business and establish oneself in the motorcycle trade with only £10,000 capital, as Julian Taylor of Taylor Motorcycles, Stafford, proves.

Taylor followed his father Jim and uncle John into the bike trade, spending more than 30 years working on the tools, before setting up on his own in 2016.

Premises – an ex-used-car site on the main A518 in the village of Haughton – were secured and family and friends worked over Christmas to clear, clean and paint the place.

D-Day was 4 January, 2016, when Taylor Brothers opened its doors for the first time, the first bike appeared for service and the business was up and running.

Five months later Taylor Brothers became a DVSA accredited MOT test centre and later that year Julian’s wife, Jackie, joined the business.

An AJS franchise followed.

In an interview with BDN, Julian admitted it has been “tough going”. Read about the couple’s experiences in the May issue of BDN.
