EUROPEAN REGISTRATIONS BOUNCE

Against a background of recovering sales towards the end of 2020’s first half, European bike industry association ACEM has reiterated the vital need for derogation of legacy Euro 4 stock. BDN financial editor Roger Willis reports.

According to latest ACEM data covering January through to the end of June, total motorcycle and scooter registrations across the five largest European markets —  France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK — were 17% down at 413,200. That represents about 80% of the entire market in Europe. And it was a big improvement on a 32.7% averaged decline during the first four months of this year, when the Covid-19 pandemic progressively paralysed commercial activity.

And mopeds have done even better in their key markets of Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain, now only 6.9% in arrearsat 110,600 over the same six months.

Commenting on these figures, ACEM secretary general Antonio Perlot recognised the self-isolating primary transport appeal that bikes have acquired since coronavirus arrived. But he also warned of a fresh threat to his industry from the failure of relevant EU and UK authorities to negotiate on Euro 5 implementation.

“The partial rebounding of the market since the restart of activities shows that consumers consider our vehicles as excellent mobility and leisure options, in the current context,” he opined.

“Nevertheless, it is still early to draw any meaningful conclusions about the short-term evolution of the market and operations within the sector. The second half of the year will be crucial. The fact remains that a large number of dealers across Europe still experience considerable financial pressure. They also face the challenge of handling excess inventory of Euro 4 models which, should there be no decisive action, will become unsellable due to regulatory changes.”
