FT BACKS BDN ON INDIA

It’s always nice to boast that you read it here first. Two weeks after BDN’s April issue predicted a growing presence for Indian motorcycles on UK roads and a sharp rise for their global profile against the Chinese, that august daily British business media institution the Financial Times has agreed with us.

The FT’s Companies & Markets section front page on 18 April led with a cover barker trumpeting “Brand power: Motorcycle makers fuel India’s manufacturing ambitions”. The news story within was headlined “Indian motorcycle makers burnish credentials”.

Among other salient items of information, the FT reported that the UK’s Warwick Manufacturing Group is designing bikes for Indian motorcycling front-ranker TVS Motor. Mark Williams, a former Jaguar Land Rover engineer now working for Warwick on this project was quoted. “They’ve got a genuine aspiration of being world class, without a doubt,” he said.

Also speaking to the FT, Royal Enfield supremo Siddartha Lal added: “I don’t think there’s any place in the world where we have negative connotations when we say our product is made in India.”
