Mark ‘The Huck’ Hucklebridge RIP

Mark Hucklebridge, the former top British motocross rider who was diagnosed as terminally ill with cancer in 2010, has died aged 39, writes Pete Plummer. Mark, a great rider and an even greater man in life, had worked vigorously for cancer charities since his diagnosis, raising many thousands of pounds.

First sponsored as a 10-year-old in 1992 by the then newly-opened Kawasaki dealership MotoXtreme,  based at Marshfield, Gloucester, he enjoyed an illustrious career both as schoolboy and in GPs. In 1998 he became the youngest ever winner of the Weston Beach race.

A gentleman and never boastful of his talents, Mark rode mostly Kawasaki then TM, VOR, Honda and KTM, both with KTM UK and the Tim Chambers team.

After retiring from top-flight sport in 2008 he went on to gain a Motor Sports Association training degree at Loughborough University to become the ACU Academy coach. He ran Hucklebridge Events along with wife Emma (also a former MX racer), a company dedicated to promoting MX. More recently he has been guiding his nine-year-old son Charlie in his blossoming MX career.

A dedicated fund-raiser, he brought the sport and the industry together with the annual Easter “family fun” charity weekend. At the 2014 event held at his Marshfield home circuit the raffle prizes included a Kawasaki Motors UK-donated KX85.

The one-off industry Golf Classic that followed in the July at Reading Golf club included a raffle-prize KX500 donated by a former team boss, Tim Chambers. Together the events raised more than £20,000 for Mark’s causes, the Friends of Huck appeal and the Royal United Hospitals Bath where he was receiving long-term treatment and care.

Mark was taken ill at a youth championship he was attending with son Charlie and was transferred by ambulance to the RUH Bath, where he died on 15 March. The funeral will take place at Marshfield Church on 31 March.

Our sympathy and heart-felt best wishes to Emma and Charlie and their extended families and many, many friends.
