15 August – motorcycle industry share price guide

After reasonable gains earlier in the week, New York’s S&P 500 index began to slide as worries about the escalating Ukraine-Russia conflict unsettled investors. It finished just 0.65 per cent up on the previous Friday. Harley-Davidson, Polaris and Arctic Cat tracked this trend with closing prices only improving by a tiny degree.

Most European bourses followed roughly the same trend. Although the Eurofirst 300 rose by 1.33 per cent on a weekly basis, Germany was a lot more pessimistic with its Xetra Dax index in Frankfurt sinking by 1.4 per cent. BMW lost ground and VW gained but both movements were very marginal. In Italy, Piaggio’s decline appeared to have bottomed out with a minor rally. Austria’s KTM displayed a much better recovery, surging upwards by 3.3 per cent.

Asian equities were a far stronger bet, however, In India, the only loser was Hero Motocorp as every other indigenous bike manufacturer enjoyed rising stock prices. Royal Enfield parent Eicher was star performer, hitting an all-time high above the 10,000-rupee mark. Mahindra also achieved a yearly high.

Japan had a good time too as Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 put on 3.65 per cent across the week. All four Japanese motorcycle brands added value. China matched that and there were no losers whatsoever among the ten listed Chinese bike producers on the Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hong Kong exchanges.
