JAPANESE ASSAULT ON INDIAN MARKET INTENSIFIES

Honda’s wholly-owned subsidiary in India has announced record bike sales growth during March, up by 55 per cent to 392,148 units. Within that, motorcycles stacked on 57 per cent at 120,796 units and scooters climbed by 53 per cent to 202,057 units.

In sharp contrast, second-largest indigenous Indian manufacturer Bajaj Auto reported a disappointingly flat month, with its domestic bike sales increasing by only 1.3 per cent to 270,591 units. However, Bajaj’s exports rose by 16.58 per cent in March, to 118,183 units. That figure includes KTM-branded machines produced under contract and destined for the UK, Europe and elsewhere.
