all-time record sales for BMW

BMW Motorrad successfully shook off the initial deleterious effects of Covid to bounce back with an all-time record global sales volume in 2021, rising by 14.8% to 194,261 motorcycles and maxiscooters.

However, strong growth in virtually all key markets was spoilt by an inconvenient solitary exception. Although Germany remained the brand’s largest consumer of its wares, domestic sales in the Fatherland actually fell by 5.6% to 25,972.

The picture was much brighter elsewhere in Europe. France led the way, 13,4% up to 19,887. Italy followed with a 15.2% increase to 16,034. Spain grew by 14.4% to 12,616. The British Isles, including Ireland, rose by 26.6% to 9263. (According to MCIA data, UK registrations were 17.7% higher at 9019.)

In Asia, Chinese sales stacked on 21.4% to 14,309. India delivered 102.5% growth to 5191. Recovery in the Americas was varied. While the USA surged remarkably, 32.1% up to 16,030, Brazil managed only a 4.1% rise to 11,150.

As for model mix, the two R1250GS adventure variants accounted for about a third of all sales worldwide. And BMW’s signature flat-twin boxer segment in which they reside took around half of overall sales. In four-cylinder territory, 1070 examples of the eye-bleedingly expensive M1000RR superbike homologation special found buyers. BMW also shifted 4796 updated S1000R naked streetfighters.

Reviewing these numbers, BMW Motorrad supremo Markus Schramm said: “The fact that we managed to finish 2021 with this fantastic result not only makes me happy but also incredibly proud. It’s precisely in times of crisis where you can see how well a team sticks together. I would therefore like to express my special thanks to all employees as well as our business partners, who made this success possible thanks to their personal commitment and flexibility.”
