AMERICAN TRADE SHOW WAR HOTS UP

The American International Motorcycle Expo (AIMExpo) in Orlando, Florida — launched last year as a direct challenger to the long-established Dealer Expo event traditionally domiciled at Indianapolis — appears to be winning this trade-show battle rapidly.

AIMExpo’s successful debut in 2013 with dates in mid-October has already forced Dealer Expo promoter Advanstar to bring its own offering forward from a January slot to early December, as well as relocating to a more attractive venue in Chicago. But the “windy city” in freezing winter weather still hasn’t got the obvious seasonal appeal of Florida’s sun-kissed Orange County. And the trade-only configuration of Dealer Expo lacks AIMExpo’s cost-constraint convenience of a format that combines trade, media and consumer access under one roof, along the same lines as European bike trade fairs such as EICMA Milan and Intermot Cologne.

Key exhibitors certainly seem to be taking that view, at least. Read what Texas-based Tucker Rocky, the second-largest US aftermarket distributor, has to say in the May issue of British Dealer New.
