BMW launches huge global expansion drive

BMW is planning huge expansion in its motorcycle operations over the next five years, it has been announced in Munich.

The German manufacturer wants more dealers selling more bikes, in more sectors, in more countries, than ever before.

BMW board members Peter Schwarzenbauer and Stephan Schaller (pictured) presented the plans to the global press corps, including BDN. 

BMW wants to be selling 200,000 bikes a year in 2020, up from 123,495 in 2014. It’s looking to expand its global dealer network from the current 1100 to 1500. It’s moving into new markets in Asia and South America, particularly Brazil. And the firm will widen its range, from the current large-capacity model bias, down into the sub-500cc sector.

Finally, BMW engineers are working on new technology ranges, including new electric scooters and a prototype electric superbike.

“We want to sustain our profitable growth in the motorcycle segment over the coming years, and make a lasting contribution to the success of BMW Group,” said Schwarzenbauer. “To achieve this, we will develop our business with new products and expansion in growth markets.”
