industry thanked for rallying round after devastating fire

Pedelec manufacturer/importer Juicy Bikes of Derbyshire has paid tribute to the “heartening quality of our bike industry to rally to each other’s aid” after a major fire at its Portugal plant earlier this year destroyed its summer stock of bicycle frames.

Two colleagues and one fire fighter were injured in the blaze which took hold on the morning of 15 June. The two staff, aged 24 and 51, were both rushed to hospital but have since made good recovery.

A spokesman for Juicy Bikes said: “We are so grateful that no lives were lost during a raging fire that completely destroyed our painting shop. This was a very serious fire.  Ninety firefighters attended with 30 vehicles from three stations regionally and we owe them all a great debt of gratitude for their prompt and efficient control of the fire which was finally extinguished late that evening.”

Investigations continue into how the fire broke out in a building where bike frames for Juicy and Neomouv are finished.  More than 1000 frames were destroyed.

The spokesman added: “The impact on supply of Juicy and Neomouv bikes this summer has been enormous and has stretched both the patience of hundreds of customers hoping to receive their new bikes for the holiday season and the perseverance of staff breaking bad news and solving the difficult problem of replacing so many frames at short notice.

“Local support has been immense and is a fine example of the heartening quality of our bike industry to rally to each other’s aid. It seems we are all on the side of Two Wheels Good, competitors or not. It was quite humbling to witness, and genuinely appreciated.

“As a consequence of that support and following a massive effort from colleagues across three continents our assembly is now producing bikes again and we expect our first production following this awful disaster to commence this week.”

BND reported in November 2018 that Juicy Bike, one of the longest established pedelec importers in Britain, had teamed up with Neomouv of France to offer a wider range of machines.

Juicy Bikes says it will begin delivering bikes to customers week beginning 23 September, some 10 weeks after the devastating fire.
