ITALIAN MARKET LEVELS OFF

After a fairly lively start to 2014, powered two-wheeler sales in Italy have now flat-lined, according to latest data from industry association ANCMA.

Total PTW sales for the first half of the year rose by just 1.1 per cent to 109,485 units. Motorcycle recovery in this January-June period was strongest, up by 7.3 per cent to 36,318 units. But scooters, as the largest sector, delivered a much more modest performance with a 2.7 per cent increase to 59,296 units. The 50cc moped slot was 16.9 per cent down at 13,871 units.

Although bike registrations during June improved again to 6473 units — a nine per cent rise — scooters were almost dead flat at 12,964 units and mopeds dropped by 18.8 per cent to 3290 units.

June typically accounts for about 13 per cent of annual sales in Italy.
