NEW BREMBO BIKE BRAKE PLANT IN ASIA

Italian automotive braking systems giant Brembo has committed an investment of more than £30m to a new motorcycle-oriented production presence in Thailand. This will initially supply components to European and US motorcycle brands with substantial Thai assembly operations — Ducati, Triumph and Harley-Davidson — before seeking additional growth opportunities via other PTW manufacturers throughout the ASEAN region.

Located in the existing Rayong Province motorcycle industry hub south of Bangkok, Brembo’s 17,000 sq. metre factory will occupy an approximate 40,000 sq. metre site, expandable up to around 95,000 sq. metres to facilitate future development. Construction officially began on 16 February. Fully operational completion is expected in the first quarter of 2025, when a 150-strong workforce will also be in place.

Commenting on his latest venture, Brembo chief executive Daniele Schillaci said: “The new production site in Thailand is a crucial step in our global expansion strategy. We can both strengthen our position in the key two-wheeler segment and consolidate our role as a solution provider for our customers operating in the country. And we also lay the groundwork for further developments of our business in South-East Asia.”

Although motorcycle braking systems currently account for about 13% of Brembo’s overall revenue, the company has previously relied on acquisitions to grow its motorcycle business. Most recently, these involved purchases of Danish brake pad brand SBS Friction and Spanish disc and caliper manufacturer J.Juan, in 2020 and 2021.
