QUEEN’S AWARD FOR COVEC

Southampton-based Covec Ltd, parent of motorcycle apparel brand Bull-It, has won a 2020 Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the International Trade category, honouring outstanding overseas sales achievements with its eponymous technical textile Covec™.

The company developed this innovative fabric by re-engineering an otherwise inflexible liquid-crystal polymer to achieve abrasion resistance, moisture regain qualities and low thermal conductivity, while enhancing the material’s strength. These properties made it ideal for personal protective wear, as demonstrated by the success of Bull-It’s specialised rider jeans, plus applications such as military clothing and other types of sports garments.

Over a six-year period, exports have risen by 587%,  accounting for 53% of total sales and hence attracting the Queen’s Award accolade. Covec has become a world leader in high-performance textiles, now selling into 14 different countries, with main markets spanning Europe and as far afield as North America, Australia and New Zealand. And besides Bull-It products, it has been licensed for apparel use by an array of reputed global brands. These include Triumph Motorcycles, Rokker of Switzerland, Klim USA, RevZilla, IXS and Bike Shed.
