Dashing Excelsior makes top money at H&H

Twenty-three sellers here (8 October), a 72 per cent conversion of the 32 machines offered on the day.

Of machines with catalogue estimates, eight were let go below bottom estimate. Five exceeded top estimate.

Top money, £21,280 (estimate £18,000-£20,000), was made by a dashing 1933 Excelsior with 500cc ohv JAP engine. This machine is reported to have won 1936 MotorCycle Clubmans event at Brooklands.

Three of the machines beating top estimates were Japanese. Two were 250cc machines which made surprisingly strong money – a 1976 Kawasaki triple (£4480) and a 1975 Suzuki GT twin (£3360). The third machine, a 1972 Suzuki GT750J was bound to exceed the artificially low estimate of £500-£800. It made £4294.

Commented H&H motorcycle specialist George Beale:  “We had a very good sale. I’m very happy with what we got, so much so that we are now adding motorcycles to our Chateau Impney (Worcestershire) classic car sale on 2 December.”
