EAST YORKSHIRE DEALER FOLDS

East Coast Motorcycle World (ECMW), based at Hutton Cranswick between Beverley and Driffield in East Yorkshire, has closed down, following allegations of financial impropriety by customers. Insolvency specialist Begbies Traynor has reportedly been appointed as liquidator.

The business was founded in 2015 and run by husband-and-wife duo Martin and Kelly Bleasby. According to its website, ECMW offered new Lexmoto and WK motorcycles plus used machines and aftermarket apparel brands including Rukka, Alpine Stars, Shoei, Schuberth, and Caberg. There was also a service workshop, on-site rider training school and café particularly noted for “Tank Slapper” all-day breakfasts. With large premises and extensive parking facilities, ECMW operated as a biker destination for the surrounding area, featuring regular evening and weekend events.

Its reputation began to unravel in late August after aggrieved customer Andrew Emms, who had placed two bikes for sale on commission deals, discovered one of them had been sold without him receiving any of the proceeds. Although Emms managed to recover his second bike, he still didn’t get money owed from the first. After he had broadcast his complaints on social media, a confrontation at the dealership ensued on 29 August, to which the police were called. Humberside Police later said that officers attending the incident had decided the case was a civil matter and no charges had been made.

ECMW subsequently announced in early September that it was shutting down for a 14-day “safeguarding” period to protect staff, customers and the Bleasby family. But it never reopened. Another out-of-pocket customer also emerged. Clifford Letts claimed ECMW had failed to return a £5800 deposit for a motorcycle and training provision. Both he and Emms are now pursuing the company through Small Claims Court action.

Then, in the first week of October, ECMW announced permanent closure because it had become “the target of a number of threats”. A formal statement went on to say: “Reluctantly, the director took a decision that there was no alternative but to close the company down due to the extreme nature of the threats and social media comment, and the effect of this on the company’s ability to trade.”

Kelly Marie Bleasby is listed as sole director of East Coast Motorcycle World Ltd by Companies House.
