help and advice on business rates

On Saturday 1 April, the revaluation of business rates comes into effect. To coincide, the Federation of Small Businesses has updated its guidance on what this means for small businesses in England. The new note provides information on reliefs available, how to appeal your rates and guidance on choosing a ratings surveyor. The new guidance can be found here.

Meanwhile, the FSB has welcomed the publication of the government White Paper on the Great Repeal Bill. This will transfer EU regulations into domestic UK law, and should eventually allow for an overhaul of some of the more burdensome processes. The FSB says it will continue to engage with the government about how regulation could be simplified post-Brexit, and will be releasing a comprehensive report in the coming months. The government has published guidance for businesses on the Bill.

Minimum Wage rise

The National Minimum Wage rose on 1 April. It went up 30p to £7.50 for workers aged over 25. Minimum wage rates for other age groups are available online here. Make sure you check the rates and update pay roll so your staff get paid correctly.
