Latest Chinese bikes 'better than Japanese machines'

Zontes importer ClementsMoto last week welcomed existing and perspective dealers to its Canterbury head office during a succession of open test days.

Each day focused on the newly launched ZT310 models – the R310, T310 and X310 – with a presentation on the background of the Zontes brand and specifically the development of the new 310 range.

This was followed by the opportunity for dealers to test ride all of the new models over a flowing 12-mile route made up of country lanes and dual carriageway. Dealers rode each model back to back with a comparison bike from a major manufacturer. Without exception, reports ClementsMoto UK sales manager Linda Fricker, the riders commented how the Zontes 310s exceeded their expectations and out-performed the major brand comparison.

In spite of the changeable weather, dealers put plenty of miles on all of the bikes, with some being caught taking their preferred machine for a sneaky extra lap.

Fricker said: “It has been encouraging to see so many dealers brave the bad weather with enthusiasm to test the new bikes, and this encouragement has only been surpassed by dealer reactions to the bikes. We appreciate these test days take the dealers out of the showroom, but am happy to report that everyone has found it very much worthwhile.”

She added: “The new Zontes models represent a significant step forward for the brand in regard to both market sector and engineering development. Though based on the same 312cc high compression ratio motor, each is unique in style and handling.

“The R310 is very much a naked sports bike, the T310 an adventure sport and the X310 a sports tourer.

“If Chinese manufacture is considered to be in its second generation, the launch of these machines beckons the start of the third generation. Each is a clean-sheet design without any suggestion of the plagiarism of early Chinese production. The bikes feature keyless entry, LCD displays, Bosch ABS and Delphi ECUs. Seats are fashioned from highly durable and flexible fabric over memory foam cushions, and for added comfort the X310 and T310 have cushioned handlebar mounts.

“Electronic security comes courtesy of the keyless ignition/immobiliser and physical security is enhanced with a standard fit mount to hold a disc lock when being ridden. The wiring looms are alarm ready.”

The motorcycles will be released in late March. Dealers who missed out on these initial days are urged to request a date in coming weeks as ClementsMoto will lay on additional tests, to ensure as many dealers have first hand knowledge of the product, which will be essential.

Dean Clements, MD at ClementsMoto, said “Whilst we have had a 250 offering in the Zontes range for a couple of years, this latest evolution signals the manufacturer’s intent to broaden its market base and be taken seriously as a manufacturer. The models are exceptional in both performance and design. We have no intention of turning our back on 125 sales, with the new Javelin 125 introduced this year; however this latest step is important for the manufacturer, ourselves and dealers.”
