The government has plenty on its plate at the moment, but the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCIA) is doing its best to keep motorcycling in the spotlight. The association has just made a submission to the Parliamentary Transport Select Committee’s inquiry on “joined-up journeys”, calling for the full inclusion of motorcycles and other L-category vehicles in the UK’s upcoming Integrated National Transport Strategy.
The MCIA submission supports a comprehensive regulatory review of emerging micromobility options, including the potential to bring private e-scooters under L-category regulation. It also asks for a full-scale review of L-category licensing requirements. There’s a plea to allow motorcycle access to bus lanes as the default position. And finally, the MCIA wants a bespoke consumer and business incentives package for L-category vehicles, to stimulate uptake.
MCIA CEO Tony Campbell said: “L-category vehicles are the missing link in the UK’s transport system – compact, clean, and capable of connecting people and businesses. By recognising their role in the Integrated National Transport Strategy, the government can deliver faster progress towards decarbonisation and a truly joined-up transport network for all.
“Modernising licensing, ensuring consistent and easy access, and investing in L-category infrastructure would unlock a more efficient, inclusive and sustainable transport system while supporting growth and innovation across the UK mobility sector.”
