sleeping worker thwarts dealership burglars

A worker sleeping overnight in a motorcycle dealership was rudely awakened by burglars and called the police. At Bournemouth magistrates court on 18 February one of the culprits admitted breaking into Crescent Motorcycles at nearby Verwood and sentence will be passed this month. The second burglar has not been traced.

The court was told that Gary Harris, 31, of Medway Road, Ferndown, was found by police sitting in the back of his van next to two KTM motorbikes – worth around £9500 – on 15 January this year. His accomplice fled the scene.

Prosecuting, Jason Spellman said police were alerted by a worker who had been sleeping at the premises and heard the burglars breaking in with a sledgehammer.

Police discovered Harris had visited the same site the day before the burglary.

Robert Renshaw, mitigating, said Harris – a ground worker by trade – had faced unemployment since moving back to Dorset to be near family.
