Preparations are underway for this autumn’s Classic Motorcycle Mechanics Show at Stafford, taking place on 10-11 October, and auction house Bonhams is bringing an impressive line-up of motorcycles to the sale. Headlining the auction is a 1972 Husqvarna 250cc motocrosser, previously owned by actor Steve McQueen, offered without reserve and estimated at £30,000-£50,000. Other highlights include a barn-find 1931 Brough Superior Overhead 680 (estimate: £20,000-£30,000) and the 1926 ex-works Scott 498cc, raced by J.H. Welsby in the Isle of Man TT, estimated at £15,000-£18,000.
Enthusiasts of classic Japanese race machines will find a Yamaha TZ700 (estimate: £18,000-£24,000) and the ex-Isoyo Sugimoto/David Emde 1978 Yamaha TZ750, which took second place in the inaugural Suzuka 8 Hours (estimate: £18,000-£24,000) among the lots. Those seeking something more modern can look forward to a 1984 Yamaha RZV500R (estimate: £8000-£12,000), a 1999 Ducati 996 Biposto (estimate: £4000-£6000), and a 1994 Honda FireBlade CBR900RR (estimate: £3000-£5000).
Bonhams has further strengthened its motorcycle auction team by appointing James Robinson, editor of The Classic MotorCycle magazine, as a consultant specialist.
Ben Walker from Bonhams said: “Our spring Stafford sale rewrote the record books by selling the ex-Mike Hailwood and Giacomo Agostini 1965 MV Agusta 500cc Grand Prix Racing Motorcycle for £967,000: the second most expensive motorcycle ever sold at auction. I’m therefore excited to open consignments to the autumn Stafford sale. We’ve already secured some outstanding motorcycles of great provenance and storied ownership, and our auction on 10-11 October already promises to be another epic Bonhams motorcycle sale.”
