THE SHOW MUST GO ON FOR NEC GROUP

The Covid pandemic has hit Birmingham’s NEC Group hard in the wallet. It incurred a pre-tax loss of £46m for the fiscal year to 31 March 2021, falling from an £18m profit in the previous 12 months. Revenue during the same period plummeted from £159m to £26m.

Best known for the National Exhibition Centre campus — home to a revived Motorcycle Live show this December — NEC Group also includes the International Convention Centre located in central Birmingham, Vox Conference Venue, Resorts World Arena and Utilita Arena Birmingham, as well as caterer Amadeus and national ticketing agency The Ticket Factory.

“The past 18 months have been extremely difficult for many businesses, including our own,” commented NEC Group chief financial officer Richard Ashton. “As a live events business that has been unable to host events, this has required decisive action and careful financial management.”

Ashton added: “But now we have re-opened, with lockdown measures eased, we are running events again and have an ambitious programme planned over the next few months. While we will continue to face short-term headwinds, we remain committed to our vision to become Europe’s most successful events business.”
