UK PTW market is now growing handsomely

According to latest Motor Cycle Industry Association data for July, the UK powered two-wheeler market is now growing handsomely.

Total registrations for the month rose by 13.9 per cent to 9886 units. This included increases of 13.9 per cent to 6688 motorcycles, 16.7 per cent to 2112 scooters and 8.7 per cent to 1086 mopeds.

Every motorcycle style category was positive except for Adventure Sport (down by 7.6 per cent), Sport/Tour (down by 0.8 per cent) and Touring (down by 11.4 per cent). Best performer was the Naked slot, up by 39.2 per cent to 2438 units and led by Honda’s CBF125M. Custom followed with a 20.5 per cent improvement. The Harley-Davidson X1200 Sportster was star of that particular show.

The 51-125cc and 651-1000cc engine capacity classes delivered the most growth, respectively up by 17.7 per cent and 19.3 per cent. Monthly best-seller was Yamaha’s YZF-R125, in the Supersport category.

Honda continued to lead the market with 1466 bikes. Yamaha was runner-up on 1188 and Triumph completed the podium with 829 — also claiming the over-500cc title. BMW and Kawasaki rounded out the top five. Most dramatically, Harley-Davidson beat Suzuki to sieze sixth place with 452 units.

For the seven months of 2014 to date, PTW registrations have climbed by 11.4 per cent to 63,880 units and the MCIA is  confident that market recovery will break the 100,000-unit barrier for the first time since 2009.
