Mid-capacity bikes seem to be the hot-ticket item in showrooms, with bikes such as the Honda GB350S and Triumph’s growing range of 400cc models regularly topping the sales charts. BMW has decided it would also like a slice of the action, launching a 450cc version of its best-selling GS range to tempt buyers looking for a lighter and lower cost adventure machine.

The F450 GS is powered by a 420cc, 48hp parallel twin, meaning it is A2 licence compatible, and it also claims to be extremely frugal, with a quoted range of 218 miles from the 14-litre tank. It weighs 178kg ready to ride, making it considerable lighter than the F800 GS (227kg) and competitors such as the Voge DS525X (206kg). As you’d expect, there is plenty of riding tech: Easy Ride Clutch and Shift Assist Pro for clutchless gearchanges, three riding modes, traction control and Dynamic Brake Control are just a few examples. For the rider there are three different height seat options, adjustable levers, LED lighting and a 6.5in TFT display. Four trim levels are available – Basis, Exclusive, Sport and Trophy – with prices starting from £6990.
