triumph makes progress in india

Having reached annual Indian sales of more than 3000 units, Britain’s flagship bike brand Triumph is anticipating growth of 20-25% by 2017, Triumph Motorcycles India managing director Vimal Sumbly told reporters at a recent Mumbai presentation of the new Bonneville Thruxton R.

Currently, Triumph ranks second behind Harley-Davidson, which shifted about 5000 units, in the tiny Indian market for large-capacity machines. In the past year, this segment grew by 2.85% to 10,234 units. India’s vast overall powered two-wheeler market was 2.7% up at 18.9 million units in the same period.

Triumph’s Sumbly also underlined that plans to launch smaller bikes had definitely been abandoned. “Considering our high base, we are confident of further building sales momentum,” he added. “But to increase volume, we will not become a mass brand by reducing prices or downsizing our engines. We want to be a niche player only.”
