BMW lands four MCN awards

BMW Motorrad has won four MCN Awards, including the ‘Manufacturer of the Year’ for the third time in four years.

The 2014 Motorcycle News Awards honoured BMW Motorrad’s leading role as a manufacturer, and for offering customers the best adventure sports, touring and retro motorcycles of the year.
•    Manufacturer of the Year – BMW Motorrad
•    Best Adventure – BMW R 1200 GS Adventure
•    Best Tourer – BMW R 1200 RT
•    Best Retro – BMW R nineT

Manufacturer of the Year: BMW Motorrad.

MCN Editor Andy Calton, left, presented Lee Nicholls, Marketing & PR Manager for BMW Motorrad UK, with the award.

BMW Motorrad has been named Manufacturer of the Year for the second year running and the third time since 2011. With a hugely successful year in road and track racing, a diverse range of class-leading and best-selling motorcycles and technological innovations across the board, BMW Motorrad has been recognised once again as a market leader.
Motorcycle News said: “Deciding the winner of this award has been a tough one this year with so many amazing bikes hitting the streets. But it’s BMW who have dominated every category they feature in – they’ve even created a new one with the R nineT. BMW have always made great-functioning bikes but in recent years they have made bikes that people drool over, aspire to own and perform better than the opposition, too.”

Best Adventure: BMW R1200GS Adventure.

The GS Adventure has always been the benchmark for the adventure-sports class – and the 2014 model continues to lead the way. The 2014 R 1200 GS Adventure brought more power, less weight, advanced technology and countless new innovations. It has been a sales success both in the UK and worldwide, proving once again that BMW Motorrad is the market leader in the sector.
MCN said: “BMW have mastered the art of making the R 1200 GS Adventure the king of its class. All-new for 2015, the Adventure got the liquid-cooled motor from the standard GS, and succeeds its standard sibling [2013 winner] for this year’s MCN Award. Both versions – the standard GS and Adventure are in the top 10 UK best sellers and that’s with good reason.”

Best Tourer: BMW R1200RT.

BMW Motorrad dominates the touring sector in the UK, with one in every two new touring motorcycles sold bearing the BMW roundel – and the R 1200 RT is largely the reason why. Offering all-day comfort, dynamic handling and the latest technology, the RT is the UK’s go-to choice for a touring motorcycle and has been the country’s best-selling tourer for the last five years.
MCN said: “At the end of the day, the R 1200 RT is a brilliant bike, winning almost every group test around the world. The many 2014 updates saw it gain the 125bhp, partially liquid-cooled engine from the GS, and it also received major bodywork revisions, too. The bike comes with riding modes, traction control and ABS, while semi-active suspension, cruise control and Gear Shift Assist come as extras. The R 1200 RT is the ultimate big-distance, big-comfort mile destroyer.”

Best Retro: BMW R nineT.

The BMW R nineT was planned as a celebration of BMW Motorrad’s nine decades of history, and as a tribute to air-cooled Boxer motor. The NineT takes BMW Motorrad into a brand-new sector of customisable retro roadsters. Blending elements from classic BMW motorcycles with some beautifully thought out touches like the hand-welded aluminium tank and the customisable seat, the R nineT struck a chord with the British public, who bought every single one in record time.
MCN said: “The BMW R nineT was meant to be a bit of a PR exercise to celebrate the firm’s 90th anniversary, but it’s turned out to be an utter stroke of genius. The build quality and attention to detail is typical BMW. The R nineT takes so many cues from classic BMW and yet manages to be bang-up-to-date with its pre-designed potential for customisation. Ultimately it succeeds because it’s just a brilliant bike.”
Lee Nicholls, BMW Motorrad UK Marketing and PR Manager, said: “The Motorcycle News Awards are very important for the UK motorcycle industry and to have won four of them, including Manufacturer of the Year once again, is a huge accolade for the brand. BMW Motorrad is committed to delivering class-leading motorcycles in every sector, offered with innovative technology that enhances performance and safety.
“This year MCN also gave accolades to three of our models, with the R nineT, R 1200 RT and R 1200 GS Adventure named as the best in their respective classes. This is fantastic news, as the public have embraced the updates to the best-selling GS Adventure and RT, while also buying every single R nineT brought into the UK.”
