GT Motorcycles adds Yamaha

GT Motorcycles of Plymouth is happy with its first six months back with the Yamaha franchise, after adding the brand to its existing stable of Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Ducati. “I’ve always had a good relationship with Yamaha,” GT Motorcycles MD Mike Grainger told British Dealer News, “but Damerell’s was the Yamaha dealer in Plymouth. When Steve Damerell decided to pull out to concentrate on his main shop at Indian Queens, that was a good opportunity. We came to an agreement and I took over the franchise, plus Steve’s stock and outstanding orders.”

He added that GT had considered turning the previous Damerell’s site into a commuter centre, but it was thought to be unsuitable.

Since June, when the switch took place, GT has faced the challenge of many existing Yamaha dealers – lack of MT stock. “We could have sold a lot more MTs if we could have got hold of them,” said Grainger, “especially the MT-10, but we did have a bit of a late start. We’ll do better next year.”

Adding the Yamaha franchise underlines GT’s current expansion. Its current site (built in 2007) has been expanded in the past 12 months with an extension containing a bigger cafe and all-new workshop.
