H-D, KTM and Triumph are voted top franchises

Dealers have chosen Harley-Davidson, KTM and Triumph as the top three franchises, while Piaggio Group, Suzuki and Ducati were considered the least-valued.

The findings come in the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA) autumn survey, published on 1 November.

“The NMDA is pleased to see that our autumn 2016 Dealer Attitude Survey received a response rate of 33%. Over the past few years there has been a view that brands with a low percentage of dealer responses have not necessarily been representative of the views of that network and could skew the results either way. For that reason, in this survey we decided to suppress the results of three brands that had less than 15% of their dealers completing the questionnaire,” commented NMDA chief Stephen Latham.

Eighty-three per cent of participants were independent dealers, 17% privately-owned groups. Sixty per cent were single-brand dealers whilst the remainder were multi-franchises.

The dealer/manufacturer relationship score average remained the same as in the last survey in spring 2016.

  • The partnership dealers have with their manufacturer scored an all-dealer average of 3.4 out of 5.
  • Ducati dealers were more dissatisfied with the partnership they have with their manufacturer, reporting a score of 2.4 (3.3 in the spring survey), the brand falling to ninth position in the ratings chart.
  • Harley-Davidson remained as the top scoring franchise with a score of 4.6 – down 0.2 points from last year.
