trade 'optimistic on sales, worried about future'

The trade is optimistic that registrations will continue to rise in 2016, according to My Car Check Trade’s motorcycle expert, Rob Hobson. “Following a 12% increase in new bike registrations last year, and a relatively strong used sector, most in the trade seem reasonably optimistic that the upward trend can continue.

“Motorcycle Trade Expo in late January is always a good barometer and sets the tone for the year ahead. Attendance figures were reportedly down at last month’s Motorcycle Live, although feedback suggested it was a positive show with a good vibe about it. There are some very exciting new bikes in niche sectors but, while new sales may be up, there is real concern about the lack of new people entering the market.

“As in previous years, we received widely differing reports about showroom traffic over the festive season. Some dealers seem to benefit from opening throughout the 10-day period, while others suggest it is not worth opening. If there was an average experience it was a quiet couple of weeks in mid-December followed by a welcome upturn in the days between Christmas and New Year.”

Turning to the used market, Hobson said there had been a slowing of overall demand but values had remained relatively strong. He predicts that demand will pick up sharply as soon as the weather improves. “Prime retail stock is still hard to find, with some looking to Europe for lower mileage clean used examples. In terms of profit opportunities, shouldn’t high value accessories be factored into sale prices?

“We wish you all the best for the weeks ahead and look forward to a positive future for the whole two-wheel market.”

My Car Check Trade provides buyers and sellers with all the vehicle price data they need: ready to retail, trade, average, retail and Cat D. As a free bonus, it also provides the annual road tax cost and key DVLA information, including the make, model, colour, engine size, body style, fuel type and date of registration.
